On the evening of September 4 and into the night of September 5, Russian forces carried out precision strikes on the airports in Kyiv and Boryspil—one day before the expected visit by American negotiators. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy linked these attacks to plans by Steve Whitcoff and Jared Kushner to fly into the country.

According to the Ukrainian president, the Russian side may have learned of preparations for the American delegation’s arrival by air, with a landing at Kyiv Airport or Boryspil—and the strikes were a direct response to that specific information.

Zelenskyy noted that such targeted strikes on airports have not been observed in a long time, and described the incident as a predictable reaction by Moscow to discussions about the possibility of using an aircraft to transport the American delegation to Ukraine. The president emphasized that Kyiv has recorded this incident as a crime committed by Russia and will take it into account in its next steps.
