On Saturday, September 5, a meeting took place in Moscow between Trump’s special representatives Steve Whitcott and Jared Kushner and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. They discussed further steps toward achieving peace in Ukraine.

This was reported by Axios journalist Barack Ravid on social media X and Reuters journalist Steve Holland.

“Whitcoff and Kushner met with President Putin to advance President Trump’s agenda for establishing peace in the Russia-Ukraine war... Both sides discussed substantive plans for next steps, which will be announced in the coming weeks, and hope for equally productive meetings tomorrow (meaning September 6—Ed.) in Ukraine,” Ravid wrote, and Holland confirmed the same information.

Both journalists cited an unnamed White House official. The same source clarified that the U.S. delegation also included representatives from the National Security Council, the State Department, and the Treasury Department to discuss proposals for ending the war.

However, the Treasury Department representative did not participate in the talks with Putin but spoke with Putin’s envoy Kirill Dmitriev. It is possible that U.S. sanctions against Russia were the topic of discussion.

“Gene Lang, acting head of the Treasury Department’s sanctions office, joined Whitcoff and Kushner on this trip. Lang participated in a preparatory meeting with Putin’s envoy Kirill Dmitriev, but was not present at the meeting with Putin,” reported Barak Ravid.
