In Belarus, Strong Winds Knocked Trees Onto Cars And Tore Off Roofs

Minsk had the most emergency response calls from the Ministry of Emergency Situations.

Severe weather over the weekend affected Minsk and five regions of Belarus. Rescue workers were called out dozens of times to clear fallen trees, torn-off sheets of metal, and other hazardous debris. In Minsk, a passenger car was damaged, but there were no injuries, according to the Ministry of Emergency Situations.

Minsk saw the most callouts—14 in total. Rescuers cut up hazardous and fallen trees nine times and removed sheet metal from roofs three times. In addition, they had to dismantle a metal structure from the facade of a residential building and remove a section of an advertising poster that had torn off a billboard.

In the Grodno Region, five reports were received regarding fallen trees and other incidents in the Grodno, Voronovo, Dyatlovo, and Smorgon districts, as well as in Grodno itself. In the regional capital, rescue workers also removed deformed sheets of metal from a water tower and the balcony of an apartment building.

In the Mogilev Region, Emergency Ministry units were dispatched seven times to clear eight fallen trees. The work was carried out in Gorki, Krasnopolye, as well as in the Chaus, Shklov, Slavgorod, and Mogilev districts.

In the Vitebsk Region, rescue workers were called six times to cut up and remove trees—in the Orsha, Vitebsk, and Dokshitsy districts.

In the Minsk Region, a tree was removed in Borisov, and in the Gomel Region, in the village of Osovtsy.

According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, no one was injured.

It should be noted that an orange wind hazard warning has also been issued for Sunday, September 6.

“On the afternoon of September 6 (Sunday), northwesterly winds are expected to strengthen in many districts in the southwest, with gusts of 15–20 m/s,” meteorologists reported.
