The spokesperson for the Russian dictator Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia allegedly “did not want and did not start” the war against Ukraine. This is reported by Russian media, according to Dialog.UA.
According to Peskov, Russia allegedly “did not want and did not start” the war against Ukraine, but is “trying to end it.” He also said that the Kremlin is counting on the resumption of trilateral talks between the U.S., Ukraine, and Russia. Peskov once again cynically stated that Russia intends to achieve the goals of the “special military operation” (as Russian propaganda refers to the war against Ukraine—ed.), but allegedly “would prefer to do so by peaceful means.”
There are currently no direct negotiations between Ukraine and Russia. Contacts between the parties are conducted through the United States.
In January–February 2026, three rounds of trilateral talks between Russia, the U.S., and Ukraine took place in the UAE and Switzerland. In the military subgroup, the parties agreed on monitoring the ceasefire, but no progress was made in the political subgroup.
A fourth round of peace consultations in a trilateral format was expected to take place in March, but this did not happen due to the war waged by the U.S. and Israel against Iran.
On September 5, representatives of the U.S. President Steve Whitcoff and Jared Kushner in Moscow discussed the terms for ending Russia’s war against Ukraine with dictator Vladimir Putin. On September 6, the American emissaries discussed this with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
