Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe
The Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE Treaty) was signed in Paris by plenipotentiary representatives of sixteen NATO member states and six Warsaw Treaty Organisation member states on November 19, 1990. The Treaty entered into force on November 9, 1992.
In 1999, at the OSCE Summit in Istanbul, an updated version of the CFE Treaty was signed, taking into account new conditions (dissolution of the WTO and NATO enlargement).
It envisaged a transition from the bloc structure of the Treaty to national and territorial levels of armaments and hardware for each State Party. The CFE Adaptation Agreement was not ratified by any of the NATO countries and never entered into force.
Russia's participation in the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE Treaty) was suspended back in 2007.
