U.S. President Donald Trump has not yet decided whether to impose additional tariffs on the largest oil buyers from Russia, China, and India—countries considered aggressors. He first intends to assess the possible compromises and consequences of such a move. This was stated on October 4 in an interview with CBS News, U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright stated this.
Journalist Margaret Brennan noted that, under a bill introduced by the late Senator Lindsey Graham, Trump must decide by October 18 whether to impose tariffs on the main buyers of Russian energy resources, and asked if he was ready to do so. “He puts off every decision until the last minute. He will weigh all the pros and cons,” Wright replied.
According to the secretary, Trump is working tirelessly to bring the Russian-Ukrainian war to an end. Wright emphasized that a cessation of hostilities would not only halt the monthly loss of tens of thousands of lives but would also significantly lower global energy prices.
Brennan also asked whether the U.S. could impose tariffs on China for purchasing Russian oil, despite Washington’s desire to maintain good relations with Beijing. Wright replied that the administration wants to develop relations with China but must use all available levers of influence to stop the war. “We must consider all available levers of influence to put an end to this bloody conflict,” he said.
The secretary declined to predict Trump’s final decision and did not specify whether he would recommend that Trump impose new tariffs.
