A fire broke out at one of the country's largest gas facilities.

A massive explosion rocked a liquefied natural gas (LNG) processing plant in Qatar. More than 50 people have been injured, and another 18 are listed as missing.

This was reported by Reuters.

What Happened

The incident occurred on June 21 during the launch of operations in the industrial city of Ras Laffan.

According to QatarEnergy, the explosion caused a fire at the Barzan gas distribution facility. Emergency response teams were deployed to deal with the aftermath. The fire has already been brought under control.

How many people were injured

According to the Qatari Ministry of Interior, 54 people were injured as a result of the explosion.

In addition, rescue services are continuing to search for 18 people who are currently considered missing.

What the authorities are saying

The Qatari Ministry of Interior stated that the incident was caused by a “technical malfunction.”

They also emphasized that no leaks of gas or other substances that could pose a threat to public safety have been detected.

At the same time, QatarEnergy has not yet reported whether the facility sustained any damage or how the incident affected its operations.

What is known about the facility

The Barzan gas complex supplies Qatar’s domestic market with natural gas.

The facility has a capacity of approximately 40 million cubic meters of gas per day. It supplies fuel to the country’s industrial and energy sectors.

In March 2026, an Iranian missile had already struck this facility. At that time, the terminal sustained significant damage.

Following the attack, Qatar completely halted production at the facility and expelled Iranian diplomats from the country.
