These models combine high reliability with an affordable price.

Choosing a first car for a young driver is an extremely important task, as a lack of driving experience significantly increases the risk of accidents. To help parents and young people make an informed and safe choice, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has teamed up with Consumer Reports.

The organizations have prepared comprehensive recommendations for purchasing vehicles that combine high reliability ratings with reasonable prices. The recommended models are divided into several categories, making it possible to find the best option for any budget—from affordable used cars to new vehicles from dealerships.

Important safety criteria and pre-purchase checks

Experts note that all recommended models have a gross vehicle weight exceeding 1,247 kg, which ensures the necessary stability in the event of a collision. The cars successfully passed crash tests and also performed well in braking and emergency maneuvering tests.

Before purchasing any used car, prospective owners are strongly advised to check the vehicle’s identification number (VIN) or license plate for any official manufacturer recalls. It’s also worth checking the certification label on the driver’s door, as some safety-related updates were introduced midway through the model year.
