Their children will go to school there.
The youngest son of King Charles III, the Duke of Sussex Harry and his wife Meghan Markle plan to return to the United Kingdom with their children as early as August, six years after stepping back from their roles as senior members of the royal family and moving to the United States. Their children will begin attending a British school in September, according to Reuters.
The Telegraph was the first to report on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s plans. According to the publication, the family intends to spend an extended period of time in the United Kingdom but will not live in one of the royal residences.
People reports that Harry and Meghan will keep their homes in California and Portugal. Exactly where the family will settle in the UK and which school their children—seven-year-old Archie and five-year-old Lilibet—will attend has not been disclosed for security reasons.
A spokesperson for Harry and Buckingham Palace has not officially commented on the reports of the move. However, a source close to the couple confirmed the reports to Reuters.
The couple’s return to Britain does not mean that Harry and Meghan will once again become working members of the royal family. They will retain the status agreed upon with Queen Elizabeth II after stepping back from their royal duties in 2020.
Harry and Meghan were married in 2018, and in January 2020, they announced that they were stepping down from their roles as senior members of the royal family. They subsequently settled in Montecito, California. In the years that followed, the couple repeatedly criticized the British monarchy in public—including in an interview with Oprah Winfrey, a Netflix documentary series, and Harry’s memoir, *Spare*.
Meanwhile, Harry’s relationship with his father, King Charles III, has recently begun to improve. In July, Harry, Meghan, and their children visited the UK, and the king saw Archie and Lilibet for the first time since 2022. However, according to Reuters, Harry’s relationship with his older brother, Prince William, remains extremely strained.
According to media reports, Charles III welcomes the opportunity to see his son and grandchildren more often, but he only learned of the family’s decision to return a few days before the news broke.
