Dozens Of People Illegally Entered Latvia Through A Tunnel Dug From Belarus

28 people illegally crossed the border through a tunnel dug from Belarus, according to the Latvian State Border Guard.

Border guards detained the migrants on August 20 in the city of Kraslava, which is located near the border with Belarus. After searching the border area, officials discovered an “underground passage concealed by moss” 20 meters from the border, according to the statement.

It is noted that 28 migrants were returned to Belarus.

Illegal migrants have been storming the Belarusian-Latvian border for 149 consecutive days, since March 25.

According to estimates by “Pozirka”, 86.2% of all attempts by migrants to enter the European Union via Belarus occurred in 2026. In 2025, this figure stood at 28.1%; in 2024, at 14.7%; and in 2023, at 32.9%.
