Scientists: Turmeric Protects The Cardiovascular System

The yellow pigment has medicinal properties.

Scientists have found that turmeric can protect large blood vessels from the damaging effects of type 1 diabetes, according to New Voice.

For people with this condition, persistently elevated glucose levels remain the main threat, since even strict control of insulin levels does not guarantee protection against cardiovascular complications.

A yellow pigment from a common spice has demonstrated powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. In rat studies, this compound helped preserve aortic elasticity and restore cellular processes disrupted by the disease.

“Curcumin acts not just as a common spice or antioxidant: it reduces inflammation, restores cellular responses, and preserves the structure of arteries,” said the study’s author, Svasti Rastogi.

The study’s findings were presented at the American Physiological Society Summit in Minneapolis. Over the course of the one-month experiment, animals receiving the compound showed normalized calcium activity and heat shock protein 70 levels. It is precisely this compound that protects blood vessel walls from losing their strength, thereby preventing the development of heart attacks.

However, the study’s authors caution against self-administering dietary supplements. The experiments were conducted only on rodents, so long-term clinical trials are necessary before the compound can be used in humans. Experts still need to determine a safe dosage and verify the substance’s compatibility with insulin.
